Its a little warmer, but its Still freezing. I hope it will warm up soon, because I have a group of heat sychronized heifers to breed. We keep our heifers at another farm, and there we have lock -ups to catch the them. These are okay, but they're outside in the open, so it could be pretty cold.

My cousin Jenny has been staying with us this week. Shes going to college for nursing. She helped me feed calves. Then I told her we had to pregnancy check some cows. She hasn't been around the farm a whole lot, so I had her beleiving the cows peed on a stick. She was curious to see this. We went out to the barn and I found the first cow. I pulled a sleeve out of my pocket and pulled it up to my shoulder. Jenny was kinda starting to wonder now. I went up behind the cow and dove in. You should of saw the look on her face as I went in up to my shoulder. Out of 17 cows I checked, 15 were with calf. I told jenny she better be watching, because it was her turn tomorrow.

winter

Its def. winter. -18 degrees with a -25 windchill here. I woke up and checked on the expectant momas, we have 8 that should calve within a couple days. What a time to be born huh. They were all fine.
We had a cow with milkfever two days ago that wasn't able to get up, but lo and behold when I checked on her today she was standing chewing her cud. Yay!!

So far the days was going good. Our only sick cow was doing good, and all I had left to do is AI a couple cows. 12 to be exact. Normally I dont mind this at all, but -25 degrees makes it a little harder. I was wearing about 5 layers of cloths before so I wasn't bad, but 5 layers makes it kinda hard to push your arm up the cow's butt espeacialy with a big thick coat. Kinda umcomfortable for her too:) I squirted some lube on my glove, but before I got to the cow (I load the gun in our heated room) the lube was froze, BRRR. I started to push my arm in her, but either my hand was cold, (yes it was), or my thicker than usual arm (because of thick coat) hurt more because she fought me like crazy. but I got her bred, hopefully. I did take my coat off for the other 11, and they were more cooperative.

Well, I hope spring is just around the corner anyway!!

I'm back...

Finally,
Well I've been a little busy. I'm working full time on our dairy farm now. I only fill in for local technicians now AI'ing. (Don't worry though, I'm still sticking my arm up cow's butts, only it our own cows now) Things have kind of settled down, so I'm going to try and keep up my blog... hoipefully anyway :)
